Friends of Bluff recognised in Coastcare awards

      FRIENDS of the Barwon Heads Bluff group have won a High Commendation in the Victorian Coastal Awards announced in April.
       Minister for Conservation and Environment Sherryl Garbutt presented the 2002 Victorian Coastal Awards for Excellence at the Hotel Sofitel in Melbourne on 15 April.
       The awards are an initiative of the Victorian Coastal Council (VCC) in conjunction with the Coast Action/ Coastcare Program. They were presented by the VCC Chairperson and former Ocean Grove resident Diane James and the Minister, and were held as a prelude to the Victorian Coastal Conference.
    Fourteen awards were presented from more than 75 nominations which recognised those who have played an outstanding role in the protection and restoration of coastal sites, building and species.
     Friends of the Bluff received the high commendation in the category Coastal Conservation by a Community Group. The award was accepted by ,John Duthie.
    Friends of the Bluff have been active in the protection, rehabilitation and maintenance of the Bluff at Barwon Heads. The group's activities have included the removal of large stands of boxthorn from the steep slopes of the Bluff, revegetation, brush matting, weed removal, boardwalk and path construction, fencing and track alignment and the development of a community nursery. 
  The group also played a large role in the Barwon Heads Festival of the Sea working with many school groups and developing the Barwon Heads Bluff Management Strategy. 
   Other award recipients in the region included the Swan Bay Integrated Catchment Management Committee (SBICM); Mark Rodrigue of the Marine Discovery Centre and Sue Longmore facilitator with the SBICM.
